WV Agri-Women’s Summer Quarterly Meeting and Farm Tour Open to Potential New Members

The West Virginia Agri-Women have set their Summer Quarterly Meeting for Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Jackie and Walter Fleming’s Delaware Valley Llama Farm in Mountain, WVa. The meeting will begin and conclude with tour participants meeting at the Phil and Norma Davis’ farm and traveling a short distance for the farm tour. The meeting is open to members and guests as well as potential new members or women interested in agricultural issues in West Virginia

Maple Confections Classes to be Held July 28 and 29

Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA), in conjunction with the West Virginia Maple Syrup Producers Association and Pierpont Community & Technical College, will host a Maple Confections School July 28th and 29th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the College in Fairmont, West Virginia.

Farm Bureau Applauds EPA Move to Ditch Flawed WOTUS Rule

WVDA Announces Three New Key Leadership Hires

Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) has announced three, new, key leadership hires. Cassey Bowden will serve as the director of the newly created Agriculture Business Development Division. Karen Facemyer will serve as the director of the Cedar Lakes Conference Center. Lastly, Dr. James Maxwell will serve as the state veterinarian and the director of the Animal Health Division. All three positions will begin work with the WVDA in May.

State’s Poultry Farmers Urged To Exercise Extra Caution After Tennessee Avian Influenza Case

Charleston, W.Va. – West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Kent Leonhardt is sending an urgent reminder to West Virginia’s poultry farmers – both commercial and “backyard” – to step up biosecurity practices and to be especially vigilant for any signs of sickness in their birds following the discovery of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) at a farm in Lincoln County, Tenn. Sunday.

West Virginia Farm Bureau Introduces “Farm Bureau Patriot Project”

BUCKHANNON, WV — West Virginia Farm Bureau is one of four state Farm Bureaus across the U.S. piloting the Farm Bureau Patriot Project, a mentorship program that matches a beginning-farmer military veteran who is starting or returning to a farm or ranch with an experienced farmer who can teach them about farming and operating an agriculture business.

Mentors and mentees are matched based on the product or commodity they produce or wish to produce as well as their location within the state.

2017 Farming Heritage Entries Sought

LEWISBURG, WV — Farming families are being sought as applicants for the 2017 Farming Heritage Award that is being offered by the State Fair of West Virginia and the West Virginia Farm Bureau.

The Farming Heritage award will be presented to a family that has strived to maintain its rural lifestyle by contributing to the community, acting as role models, dedicating time to efficient agricultural production, and maintaining the upkeep of their farm through generations.
