The Endodontics program at UCSF is a full-time program, beginning July 1st of each year.

The program is fully accredited and meets the educational requirements of the American Dental Association (ADA). Graduates of the program are educationally qualified for board certification by the American Board of Endodontics.

Instruction is presented through lectures, seminars, demonstrations and conferences and is supplemented and emphasized by clinical treatment of patients.

Two candidates are accepted annually into the program. A certificate in Endodontics is awarded upon completion of the 24 month residency program. Applicants must have a DDS or DMD degree (traditional or an international DDS/DMD degree) from a United States ADA accredited dental school.

The Division of Endodontics affords dental graduates interested in endondontic postgraduate specialty training an outstanding environment in which to pursue their education.

University of California, San Francisco is one of the ten campuses of the University of California and the only one devoted solely to the health sciences. It consists of a Graduate Division and four top-ranked professional schools: Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. UCSF has a worldwide reputation for excellence in teaching, patient care and biomedical research.


The didactic portion of the curriculum places emphasis on the biological aspects of the pathogenesis and treatment of endodontic diseases. Advanced courses in microbiology, oral pathology, classic and current endodontic literature and clinical case presentations are integral parts of the curriculum. The program of study is designed to train endodontists who are capable of changing their therapeutic approaches based on new data from well-controlled scientific studies.

Approximately 50-60% of the overall curriculum is devoted to clinical training. Experience is provided in all modalities of endodontic treatment, including conventional and surgical endodontic treatment. Use of the Surgical Operating Microscope and CBCT 3D imaging is fully integrated into patient care.



Applicants must first submit an application to:

  • Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) by the program’s August 1st deadline. They must include with their PASS application: Personal Essay, Curriculum Vitae (CV), dental school transcript, unofficial copies of all undergraduate transcripts (including community college), three PASS evaluation forms (one from an Endodontist), one Dean’s Institution evaluation, and all required scores reported in the application.

Please submit the $60 non-refundable application processing fee on the Online Payment portal (OPEN ON JUNE 1).

If you have foreign course work you must submit the following directly to SoD Office of Admissions (even if it was previously uploaded via PASS) by Aug 1:

  • Official transcript(s), detailed marks reports, etc, sent directly from the issuing institution from all college-level course work taken at a college or university outside of the United States, or a Canadian institution where English was not the official language of instruction.
  • For ALL foreign transcripts received outside of the US including Canadian schools where English was not the official language of instruction, require an official course-by-course evaluation from Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. or World Education Services .

PLEASE NOTE: Only those applicants who meet all admissions qualifications and submit all required documentation within the deadline, including the application processing fee, will be considered for a position.


Admission is based on the applicant’s pre-dental and dental school grade point averages, National Dental Board Examination scores, research experience, clinical experience, letters of recommendation and interview.


One of the program’s major assets is the breadth of its faculty. Our faculty, who received their advanced training from many different institutions participate in the instructional activities of the program. In addition to this talented group of endodontists, a large number of other clinicians participate in our training program from virtually all dental specialties.


Yearly stipends are available, depending on eligibility and funding availability. A facilities, supply and educational fee is due each year and fees are subject to change without notice. Postgraduate students are expected to devote 100% of their professional activities to the program. Permission to carry out practice or other professional activities outside of the program can be granted only in exceptional circumstances by the Program Director.
