What Are Your Considerations?
Assessing the best online Six Sigma training for an individual requires consideration of budget, timeline, preferred learning style (instructor-led vs. self-paced), and other factors. So while there are no training programs that are objectively “best” for every individual, we have compiled a list of some of the top most reputable sources for online training in Six Sigma methods and philosophy .
When selecting an online Six Sigma training program, consider more than just how well the program fits your budget and schedule. Review the curriculum to make sure it is comprehensive. Check out these summaries from iSixSigma.com on what should be included in Green Belt and Black Belt curricula. Look around online to get an idea of the provider’s reputation, and see if you can find personal testimonials or stories about the program you’re interested in. Also find out if the program offers CEUs (Continuing Education Units), even if you don’t need them, as it would be a sign of a reputable organization with proper accreditation.
The Best Online Six Sigma Training Options
Tom Pyzdek literally wrote the book on Six Sigma: The Six Sigma Handbook, that is. He now offers self-paced online Six Sigma training based on that body of knowledge through The Pyzdek Institute. For the pricing options below, monthly payments are also available.
- Green Belt training ($1395) includes 45 modules with readings, narrated lessons, storyboards, and quizzes. Students also have a year of access to online resources such as templates, workbooks, and video lessons. An online forum allows interaction with the instructor. The content is based on the Green Belt body of knowledge from Pyzdek’s book.
- Black Belt training ($2395) is similar to Green Belt training but more comprehensive, covering 60 online modules and a wider body of knowledge. Pyzdek also offers Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training ($2395) for individuals who are interested in learning both Six Sigma and Lean philosophies and techniques.
With each course, Pyzdek offers multiple-student discounts, plus optional add-ons such as an online exam, a formal project review, and Six Sigma software licenses. Payment plans are also available. Each course’s cost includes an autographed copy of the book. (Anyone who already owns the book can get the $60 price deducted.) The Institute publishes a list of students who successfully complete the course and provides a certificate of completion. They offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Ranked highly by the likes of U.S. News World Report and Business Week. Villanova is a nearly 200-year-old institution that offers extensive online Six Sigma training.
Their programs feature instructor-led streaming video lecture, two-way online voice communication, and faculty-hosted message board, among other features. Individual course offerings include:
- Six Sigma Green Belt ($1980): In addition to the general course, VU offers specialty courses in financial services, healthcare, and information technology.
- Lean Six Sigma ($1980)
- Lean Six Sigma Black Belt ($3980)
The Black Belt course runs for 16 weeks, while the other two courses are each eight weeks long. You can view the full curriculum for each course on the site. These courses are taught by respected practitioner George Eckes.
Students can also opt for the Master Certificate in Six Sigma, which combines the three courses above (including the general Green Belt course or a specialty version) and offers a nearly $1000 discount.
The newest addition to the VU curriculum is a 12-week Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt class ($2980).
The American Society for Quality (ASQ)
ASQ is a respected professional organization whose scope includes not only Six Sigma but other quality methodologies as well. Their Six Sigma training offerings include courses in a self-paced format:
The courses are designed to help students prepare for the certification exams that ASQ offers at both the Green Belt and Black Belt levels. Students have one year to complete the course.
ASQ provides refunds up to five business days from the start of the course, less a processing fee, but does not provide any refunds after that. Group rates are available. Membership in ASQ may be required for course registration, but ASQ offers a variety of affordable membership levels.
